Hubble's most detailed image of the Crab Nebula

Act One

Bang!

God laughed
and millions of galaxies
spiralled away like firecrackers
into the curving dark.

How’s that!
said God,
to nobody in particular.

God considered
nobody’s point of view.

His best idea
simmered
in the slow cooker
of evolution.

Turning the dial
to interactive
he brought it to the boil.

Ah, men!
beamed God,
and settled himself down
with his freshly-made audience
to enjoy the show.

But the players hadn’t learned their lines.
Creation began to unravel
before God’s widening eyes,
spectators coolly hardening
into critics.
