Poem

The poem's cv

I was born
as a catch in the breath,
the lazy cousin of the parable.

My mission is
to negotiate a settlement
between faith and doubt.

I feed on imagination.
I am the spending of kinetic energy
like lightning on a sultry night.

I am ambitious.
I am restless for analogy
and sleepless with desire for metaphor.

My principle achievement has been
suspension of belief and disbelief.
My last career will be in science,

weighing the will against the gene, staking out
the infinite distance between co-ordinates
of truth and what now passes for illusion.
